Review: Area 51 Nightstalkers (Book #10) by Bob Mayer

Nightstalkers (Area 51, #10)Staff Sergeant Winthrop Carter has just been drafted into the Nightstalkers—an elite group of soldiers that...

Actually, he’s not quite sure what they do.

Born from the Area 51 initiative, the Nightstalkers defy sanity and decorum and include among their ranks Moms, a Black Ops trainee too extreme for Special Forces; Doc, a scientific crackpot; Roland, the weapons enthusiast; and Mac, a contemporary MacGyver. All of them take their orders from the elusive Ms. Jones, who everyone claims is just a hologram.

Those orders include tracking down and sealing tears in our reality that are releasing interdimensional beings known only as Fireflies— creatures that take control of both living and inanimate matter in order to unleash wanton destruction.

Just as Carter is settling in, a rogue scientist triggers a fresh invasion of Fireflies that swarm a swanky gated community. Now it’s up to Carter and his new teammates to neutralize the threat while figuring out who’s behind the breach.

My Review: 4 Delectable

Okay, now I am going to be honest here and say that I have not read the other 9 books in this series. But when I read the synopsis on this one, I knew that I had to read it. And I think that this is a good test of any series. Can you pick up any book in the series and understand what is going on, understand the story and get wrapped up in the characters? And I can say that with this series you can. Bob Mayer wrote this book so that anyone could pick it up at any book and get a feel for the overall series and know the characters.

Now I admit it took me about a chapter to get my barrings, but it was a chapter well spent completely immersed in action. That's right Bob Mayer didn't wait to bring the action into this book he hits you with it from the first page! And it doesn't stop until ever word is read!

And what I love even more is the humor that Bob Mayer puts right in the middle of some intense action, helping to bring you back down to earth and reminds you that these characters are so comfortable with what they do that they can find the humor in anything. This team of elite soldiers work as a well oiled machine and it is clear that they are the best at what they do. When the team goes through personnel changes things hit a little close to home and they are determined to clean it up. (I would love to say more here, but really it would give too much away).

I love the characters in this story and the roles that they play within the team. As a reader you could tell that they were a team, and that they weren't just characters thrown together. Even the small side characters were given detail and depth which really helps you connect with the story.

Despite all that I loved about this book there were times where I found myself killed with details. Now I know that you need to paint a picture but sometimes I like it when I am able to come up with some of the details on my own, not every detail of a tree needs to be described.

That said, Nightstalkers is a great sci-fi action book, that get's your heart pumping your mind spinning and makes you wonder what's out there. The sci-fi elements in this book are so believable that it makes you wonder if any of that is really possible. I know it makes me look at the desert that surrounds me a little differently. Well I can say if it is possible I know who I want on my side.

So if you are looking for a sci-fi book that is full of action, humor that has a touch of realism then Nightstalkers is definitely the book for you.

Favorite Character Moment:

"Roger," Support responded. "Diapers and tampons."
"I'm gonna need a lot more flamers," Roland said, smiling at the thought. (Kindle, loc 3434).

Okay I know that this quote seems odd, but trust me once you read the book you will totally understand. I chose this because it shows how this team works together and how they tackle anything with a bit of humor. This was probably my favorite part of the entire book.

"Devouring worlds, one book and recipe at a time."

  2. Well the good news is it's technically not the 10th book in the series. There were 7 books in the original Area 51 series, then I did two prequels. This book, Nightstalkers, actually is a big spin off, starting a new series.

    Thanks for the review!
