Review: Raksha by Frankie Rose

Raksha*Received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis:
She has no name.

She has her knives; her training; her halo.

The first and second give her the tools and the skill to defeat the opponents she is pitched against each month. The third frees her from pain and fear. From any kind of emotion at all. Everything is as it should be. Everything is as it should be, until…

FearPainAngerHappinessDesireGuilt

Love.

When a newly-named Kit escapes the Sanctuary after killing her best friend, the last thing she needs is another knife in her hand. Or Ryka, the damaged, beautiful blonde boy, who she refuses to let save her. Still learning how to process the onslaught of her new feelings, the sights and sounds of Freetown are overwhelming and strange. There are a hundred differences between her old home and her new one, but one thing remains starkly similar: the matches. Yet where the blood in the Sanctuary landed only on the colosseum floor, Kit will quickly learn that a river of red runs through Freetown’s very streets.

Freed from the oppression of a society who stole her right to feel, the true horror of her old life leaves Kit wondering if she really has been freed at all. Would she be better off without the crippling horror of all the blood on her hands, or is the love of one boy worth living through all the pain?

Raksha is the call of the dead. The rumbling chant for fresh blood from the other side, the demand for sacrifice. The colosseum is behind Kit. The fighting pits await.

You have been called to the fights.

My Review

Okay I am just going to dive right in with this review. No pussy footing around. Cause seriously, Frankie Rose doesn't mess around when it comes to the deep crap that happens in this book. First of all the main character has no name and no feelings. So instantly I was like, no freaking way. Talk about opression. Then comes the next doozy, the main character is a warrior, a fighter, a champion who has to fight to live. It is kill or be killed. And that just brought this book to a whole new level. I like to think of this book as sort of like Hunger Games on crack.

Because unlike Hunger Games these people have no freaking idea how serious the crap is that their doing. Simply they don't feel it. They don't recognize the wrongness of it deep in their soul because they are not allowed to. They may think to question it, but when they do their little Halo's kick in and erase any feeling of unease that may have crossed their mind. Seriously messed up crap! I know I couldn't imagine going through life not feeling. Not knowing what life was really like out there, not knowing love and every other possible emotion in the spectrum.

But not everyone in Sanctuary is unfeeling. Certain people are privileged enough to feel, but there are others who plot to help everyone feel. And that is what happens to Kit (as she comes to be known), someone decides to set her free. To wake her up and give her the freedom to experience all that a life with emotion has to offer.

And Kit thinks that it is well pretty f'd up. She was perfectly happy with not feeling. With not feeling everything that goes with the weight of taking a life and Kit has taken a lot of lives. Cause Kit is pretty freaking fierce! Confused and torn about what to do with her freedom, Kit is finally given no choice but to run.

Now Kit is in a new world where things are just as deadly and just as dark, but where there is darkness there is also light; happiness, joy, laughter, and even the possibility of love.

I have to say that I absolutely love Kit. She is so kick butt, so dedicated, so calculating and so absolutely fierce. She really gives females a good name. Then there is Ryka. Who is completely fierce and incredible in his own remarkable way. He is every bit a warrior as Kit and challenges her in ways that she never thought possible. With Kit also challenging him at every turn. But where Kit is hard and uncaring, Ryka is full of hope, friendship and love. Ryka is the light in what could be a dark world for Kit. Ryka is cocky, but loyal, dedicated and has looks to boot.

The story was great. It was told well, developed well and incredibly believable. Your heart couldn't help but tug at the things that happened throughout this story. I am an action junkie so this book was right up my alley. And I loved it. The story was so well layered that the second time you read it you will easily pick up on things you didn't the first time. Yes, I will probably read it again. My only complaint about the entire book is that there are numerous editing issues. Normally I overlook editing issues, but usually they don't happen this frequently. I can't imagine what this book could be with a fresh dose of editing. But that being said.....

In Raksha Frankie Rose gives us wonderful character development, great adrenaline pumping action, heart melting moments all with an edge of danger. Raksha is a must read for all you Dystopian junkies out there because it will take you to the edge of your seat and push you right off.

So naturally I am giving it......

I have many favorite moments in this book. But the one I am going to share with you is also a touching one. One that leads to an even better moment, that I can't share with you without giving something away, but you will catch my drift.
"Life isn't just fear and horror all the time, y'know? The sweet moments are usually worth the suffering you go through along the way." (kindle, loc. 3472).

My Review

Every since I was a little girl I have been a fan of fairy tales. I have them to thank for my romantic ways. But we all know how fairy tales end, Happy Ever After. When I was first asked to read Belle Noir: Tales of Love and Magic I was immediately intrigued by the darkness that was hinted at through the synopsis.

And as I read through the compilation of stories I was not disappointed as each story took what I expected from a fairy tale and turned it on its head, delivering a darker, more realistic and pessimistic view.

With every story Ava Zavora transported me to another place in time as each story felt like it was told from an ancient time.

Though I enjoyed all the stories in this collection, my favorite had to be Mirabilis. It leaned slightly more toward a traditional fairy tale, but it still had a dark edge. I found that I couldn't help but have hope for a happy ending as I read the story of Lord Devlin and Rosaria. The story of Mirabilis was reminiscent of the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast, but with wonderful twists that only made the story better. Just like in Beauty and the Beast you can't help but route for a happy ending. Especially after all the not so happy endings in the other tales.

But there were times where I felt that the way the stories were told also confused the stories, often giving you the sense that the tenses changed throughout the stories; causing some stories easier to follow than others.

Despite that, the stories in Belle Noir: Tales of Love and Magic definitely give the readers a twist on the usual fairy tales and delivers the reader to a time when things didn't always seem to end with happy ever after. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for a darker take on fairy tales.

Belle Noir: Tales of Love and Magic will transport its readers to another place in time. A place of undeniable odds, a place of magic, and a place where you never know the ending.

{Book Blitz & Excerpt} City of Scars by Steven Montano

On June 25th Author Steven Montano released his latest in Fantasy called City of Scars. And let me just tell you that he has been teasing me with excerpts from it for months now, so naturally I have been dying to get my hands on this book. Finally my wait is over, the book is finally here and I can get my fill of Steven Montano's new character Dane, that is until the book ends. I am almost done reading this book and have to say, that is just as good, if not better than his Blood Skies Series. (Maybe) I am in complete love with this new world and can't wait to share my review with you all soon. But enough from me onto the book at hand!

Book Blurb~

It’s been three decades since the Blood Queen led her legions on a brutal campaign of conquest and destruction, and the Empires are still struggling to rebuild. Now, in the distant aftermath of the war, the real battle is about to begin.

Haunted by the crimes of his past, fallen knight Azander Dane ekes out a mercenary existence as he drifts from one city to the next. His latest job is to hunt down Ijanna Taivorkan, a powerful outlaw witch desperate to escape her destiny.

Dane and Ijanna find themselves in Ebonmark, the City of Scars, where deadly crime guilds and shadowy agents of the White Dragon Empire prepare for a brutal confrontation. Pursued by apocalypse cults, mad alchemists, exiled giants and werewolf gangs, Dane and Ijanna soon learn a deadly lesson – in Ebonmark, only the cruelest and most cunning can survive.

City of Scars is the first volume of The Skullborn Trilogy, an all new epic fantasy adventure from the author of Blood Skies.

And guess what Fantasy fans! Steven Montano is giving away signed paperback copies on Goodreads right now! Make sure you enter here: Goodreads Giveaway

Now for the excerpt....

Excerpt

The right-hand gate rose.  Dane and a hundred bloodthirsty gamblers waited for Maddox’s fighter to appear, and when he did a collective cheer rose from all but Dane, who at that moment realized those people truly were insane.

It was a giant – a twelve-foot tall black-fleshed brute with knotted rune-carved muscles and fearsome white eyes.  His bald head was lined with scars and the muscles in his neck bulged as he twisted his fearsome visage from side to side to take in the crowd.

The giant’s arms were as big around as a human’s torso, and his hands were so massive Dane guessed he could easily take a stallion’s head in his grip.  Simple black armor covered the giant’s lean body, but the creature’s midnight flesh was darker.  His tiny white eyes peered around the room angrily, and when the creature opened his mouth his thick blunt teeth shone in the dim light.  The giant held a gigantic war axe in his grip, and a thick silver collar had been fitted tightly around his muscular throat.

It was a Voss, creatures who dwelled in enormous underground cities and plotted the downfall and enslavement of all other races, surface and subterranean alike.  Despite their size and ferocious appearance the Voss were known more for their cruelty and cunning rather than their strength.  During the Rift War they’d acted as the Blood Queen’s engineers, and they’d labored tirelessly to construct Veilcrafted war machines which had devastated Jlantria and Den’nar.  As impressive as it was that a Voss had been captured and enslaved, Dane wanted to find this Maddox and strangle him – bringing a giant into a human city was like walking a lion through a field of lambs.

About the Author~
Steven Montano is an accountant by day and an author by night.  Sadly, he doesn’t own a superhero costume.  He’s also hopelessly addicted to books, films, music and video games, the darker the better.

Steven is the author of Blood Skies, Black Scars, Soulrazor, Crown of Ash, The Witch’s Eye, Tales of a Blood Earth 1 and 2 and something black….  He’s currently hard at work on Blood Angel Rising, a horror novel; Chain of Shadows and Vampire Down, the next two installments of the Blood Skies series; and Path of Bones and The Black Tower, the remaining books of The Skullborn trilogy.

He lives in Washington State with his wife, two children, a dog of below-average intelligence, and a ridiculous number of books and bottles of wine.

But before you go, I do want to leave you with one incredibly steamy, swoonalicious scene that will leave you a little weak and might even make you forget your name......

"Kiss me in a way I'll never forget." I drew his eyes toward mine. "Kiss me in a way that will stay with me until I see you again.".......

His hands steadied my face, holding me still before him. The wind tangled my hair around his wrists, twining us together. His thumbs moved across my cheekbones in slow, intimate caress. Despite the cold, a steady burn coiled up inside me, vulnerable to his touch. His fingers traced lower, lower, leaving behind a hot, delicious ache. I closed my eyes, my joints melting. He lit me up like a flame, light and heat burning at a depth I'd never fathomed.

His thumb stroked my lip, a soft, seductive tease. I gave sharp sigh of pleasure.

Kiss you now? he asked.

I couldn't speak; a wilted nod was my reply.

His mouth, hot and daring, met mine. All play had left him, and he kissed me with his own black fire, deep and possessive, consuming my body, my soul, and laying waste to all past notions of what it meant to be kissed." (Finale, p.398).
Now I will let Patch's Awesomeness speak for itself!

Book Blurb

In a perilous race across the world, having the best Pandora can be the difference between life and death.

Sixteen-year-old Tella Holloway isn’t happy. Her mother rushed them out of Boston and into a craptastic house nestled in Middle of Nowhere, Montana. To make matters worse, Tella’s brother is sick, and though a dozen doctors can’t determine the cause, her mother is sure Montana’s “fresh air” will help. Now Tella spends her days being homeschooled, and uses her imagination as entertainment.

But when a small blue box appears on her bed, Tella’s world is rocked. Inside the strange package she finds a white ear bud—and after she fits it into place and touches its blinking button—an unknown voice fills her head. Tella is invited to join the Brimstone Bleed, a race across four ecosystems: desert, sea, mountains, jungle. The voice in Tella’s ear explains she has 48 hours to retrieve her Pandora, an animal genetically designed to help her win.

Tella has never been the sporty type; she’s more a cheerleader than an athlete. But despite her mother’s warnings, she’s determined to compete in the race. And she’ll do anything to win, because if Tella is the Brimstone Bleed victor, she'll be granted a specific gift—the cure to save her brother’s life.

FIRE & FLOOD is a teen thriller set in modern day.

Review: Zarconian Island by Aja Hannah

Zarconian Island
*Received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis:
My stomach knotted tighter, winding so hard it hurt.
Kate watched me, rubbing a piece of her hair between two fingers.
I bit my tongue, trying to work the words out.
"The boat …we're going under.”

Possessing powers that are feared and shunned, eighteen-year-old Alexandra “Attie” Hotep is no virgin to attacks. Her ancestors, the Zarconians-- mixed-blood inhabitants of Atlantis--were rumored to be the English fairies who kidnapped children, the Caribbean sirens that sunk ships, and the dream-like apparitions who broke into psyches. By the 1850s, they were hunted to near-extinction, leaving the existence of Atlantis and Zarconians little more than myth.

When a class trip turns deadly, Attie and her friends become stranded on an uncharted tropical island in the middle of the Pacific, and Attie finds herself targeted once more. With a jungle full of extinct and prowling animals, she struggles to find a compromise between keeping her friends safe and keeping her family's secret.

Enter Doug Hutchinson—the school’s soccer star, and a handsome boy with his own secrets. But Attie and Doug soon realize the animals aren't the only threat. There is a traitor amidst the group, one that plans to turn all Zarconians into permanent myths. And Attie is next on the list.

My Review

From the minute I picked up Zarconian Island I was intrigued. Seriously, a story about the people from Atlantis? Awesome, sign me up for that ride. And immediately I was wrapped up in a story of mystery, deception, magic, and love.

In Zarconian Island we follow the story of Attie, a young Zarconian who on a school trip winds up stranded on a deserted island. But no one but her best friend knows her secret, because if they did they would surely hunt her and wipe out the Zarconian race completely. But Attie is not alone on the island. In the company of fellow students she discovers that she is not the lone Zarconian on the island, and one in her group wants to make her a thing of the past.

In reading Zarconian Island I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about them being trapped on an island. I know a little late for that, since it is in the synopsis, but I still had mixed feelings. I mean I was excited for what it could all mean and the potential for the story, but still nervous. After all, I had watched numerous movies where teens were trapped on deserted islands and it never seemed very realistic. But I have to say that I was rather impressed with the realism in this book. Sure there were things that I doubted and questioned, but not half as much as I did in those movies.

Deserted island aside, I loved the idea of the story. The idea that there are people among us that are really the lost people of Atlantis is pretty cool. I love how Author Aja Hannah took that idea and pushed it to the extreme, making Zarconians just like everyone else, except for some very rare and awesome abilities. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters in Zarconian Island as each of them had their own little secrets and acted just like I imagine actual teenagers would.

My one and only real problem with the story was why did that certain someone, psst the traitor, wait to make their move? They had plenty of opportunities to do what they wanted to do, so why wait. I just didn't get it. I guess it did make for an interesting story, helping to build more intrigue and suspense, but I didn't really care for it. But that was the only thing that bothered me about the story of Zarconian Island.

So, if you are looking to get lost in a world where just about anything is possible. A story that gives you suspense, love, magic and mystery, then Zarcnonian Island is the story for you. Pick this up and start your adventure.

~* DAWN & SEBASTIAN - REAWAKENED *~

Sebastian was the first to break our soundless stalemate. “Don’t you get it?” he asked, towering over me. “I can’t not worry, Dawn.” His eyes pierced through mine. “You planted yourself inside my head and now I can’t get you out.”

“You should.”

“I’ve tried, believe me.”

“Well, you should try harder,” I mumbled, my fury slowly fizzling away.

He shook his head. “I’m not sure that I want to. I like how you feel inside my head.” He ran a hand through his wet hair, then rested it against the open door behind me. The gesture caused him to lean forward, bringing him even closer.

Suddenly, all I could think about was the hard curve of his full, enticing lips.

If I just tilted my head slightly…

Snap out of it! my subconscious warned as I bit down on my lip.

“Those feelings that you have are a lie!” I blurted out, pulling back. “It’s all because I gave you my blood and accidentally ingested yours. It’s like some kind of a Born-Made blood curse,” I said, though, this—whatever it was—felt nothing at all like a curse.

“Are you telling me that I must ignore every single thought that’s going through my mind right now?” he asked, moving closer.

I took a tiny step back. “Yes. Definitely.”

“What about my feelings?”

“Uh-huh. Those too.”

“Every one of them?” His voice was low and husky.

“Yes,” I whispered.

“Fine.” He was saying one thing, but doing another, I realized, as he inched even closer.

“Good.” I retreated further into the partially open door.

The cool sensation of the wood soothed my burning skin. My back pressed against the door, forcing it to slam shut. Sebastian’s arm buckled under the sudden shift, sending him tumbling into me. He caught himself with his other hand mere inches before colliding with me, swiftly placing it on the other side of my head.

There was nowhere to run.

And even if I could escape, I wasn’t sure that I wanted to. My head spun as I soaked in the aromatic fragrance of his body. Soap and bare skin and something more severe. Icy. Dangerous. His breath held a hint of cool mint, and I was suddenly overcome with the desire to taste him. Trying to expel the thought, I bit down on my bottom lip, desperately pleading with my heart to still.

He’s the last person you should be thinking about kissing right now! the rational part of my mind screamed. The less rational part craved his lips and thirsted for his touch.

“Do your wounds hurt?” I asked in a frantic attempt to change the subject. I looked down at the light pink marks across his chest and arms.

“No. Do yours?” He cradled the back of my neck with his hand, gently trailing the two tiny fading scars with his thumb.

I shook my head and closed my eyes, losing myself in the sensation of his touch.

“Good,” he whispered.

An astounding wave of pleasure surged through my body as he pressed his mouth to the wound, igniting the memory of his fangs against my skin. He trailed tender kisses along the side of my neck, down to my clavicle, then back up toward my jaw. His lips grew fierce and his kisses deepened as his mouth finally found mine. I parted my lips, pulling him tighter into me, forgetting all about my intention to fight him.

Ada began her writing career at age three with a string of short stories that only a mother could love, and has been inventing quirky characters and imaginary worlds ever since. Her readership has now grown to include people who aren't directly related to her. A passionate advocate for the arts, Ada is also an editor-in-chief of VEUX Magazine - a fashion/literary publication which showcases up-and-coming talent from all over the world. Amongst other things she enjoys are zombies, chocolate, and bubble tea.
Ada lives in Toronto, Canada, and when she's not writing you can find her on an adventurous nature hike with her puppies, Caramilk and Oreo. Or deep in a jar of Nutella.

Kojiki by Keith Yatsuhashi Book Blitz

Okay people, today I have a book that is for all you Anime fans out there! Make sure you check this out!

Book Info-
Title: Kojiki
By: Keith Yatsuhashi
Published: April 19th, 2013 by Musa Publishing
Word Count: 109,000

Book Blurb--
When eighteen-year-old Keiko Yamada’s father dies unexpectedly, he leaves behind a one way ticket to Japan, an unintelligible death poem about powerful Japanese spirits and their gigantic, beast-like Guardians, and the cryptic words: “Go to Japan in my place. Find the Gate. My camera will show you the way.”

Alone and afraid, Keiko travels to Tokyo, determined to fulfill her father’s dying wish. There, beneath glittering neon signs, her father’s death poem comes to life. Ancient spirits spring from the shadows. Chaos envelops the city, and as Keiko flees its burning streets, her guide, the beautiful Yui Akiko, makes a stunning confession--that she, Yui, is one of a handful of spirits left behind to defend the world against the most powerful among them: a once noble spirit now insane.

The Earth itself is at stake, and as Keiko fights to save it, strange, dormant abilities stir within her. She suspects they are vital to her world’s survival, but to summon them, she must first unlock the mysteries within herself and a past shrouded in mystery.
