~Excerpt~

If I hadn’t already been so stunned by the contents of the room, I quite possibly would’ve been shocked immobile by the palpable interest of over a dozen—old—no, ancient—vampires locked on me. This included Max, whose steely grey eyes had widened as he sat up in the oxblood leather chair he had been lounging upon, clearly taken aback by my spectacular entrance. The weight of age in this tiny room was crushing; a football stadium would be too small to contain the power they were unconsciously radiating. It only took a few seconds for me to figure out that, whatever the hell they were doing here, obviously they now considered me part of the menu. I hastily backed up, using my arms to cover as much of myself as I could, while Max schooled his own features into a passably blank expression.
“Of course,” Max said, his smooth voice carrying only the tiniest hint of irritation as he eased back in his seat and nodded in my direction, “I had not intended to showcase her so soon, though I don’t suppose there’s any harm in it. She is newly arrived, and has not been groomed properly for servitude yet. I doubt you would be interested in one so fresh, Kyle.”
I skittered back, but a guard who had been standing to one side of the door barred my escape and I backed right into him. He laughed at how I jumped at the unexpected contact before giving me a little shove in Max’s direction. I pivoted and darted to the side so I could press against the wall instead.
No weapons, no way out, and surrounded by vampires. I was on the verge of hyperventilating, and Max didn’t seem keen on stopping the guy he’d addressed as Kyle from approaching me.
This new vampire was well dressed in a tailored “I make a thousand dollar suit look like cheap trash” way. He set aside a cane with a freaky demon-looking thing crouching on top with what I would swear were real diamonds for eyes before approaching me. The power of his mien paled to the invasive metaphysical touch that brushed over my skin, tasting some intangible part of me and making me want a piece of sandpaper, a pumice stone, and the world’s hottest shower to scrub the feel of it off of me. His manicured nails were blunt, shining as brightly as that whiter-than-white smile when he ran a smooth fingertip over my cheek, the other hand lifting to toy with one of my bra straps. I flinched and batted his hands away before twisting aside and putting some much-needed distance between us.
“Mm, perhaps you’re right. Aside from being fresh, she’s got facial scars. I do hope you weren’t intending on offering damaged goods.”
Though I wasn’t often hung up about my looks, his comment sent my hand flying to my lower lip in reflex. I often did my best to forget about the scar left behind when Peter bit me, nearly tearing my lip in half in the process of assaulting me.
Another vampire spoke up, his tone dripping disdain. “Look how scrawny she is. No meat on her where there should be. And that skin of hers is a wreck—the mark on her face is not the only one I see.”
And another. “This one is disappointing, Euphron. Very disappointing.”
Scowling, I dropped my hand away and balled my fingers into tight fists of rage at my side, finding the condescending laughter of the others in the room too much to bear. Max started speaking but I cut him off, shouting loudly enough for most everyone to flinch.
“I’m not a fucking pet, I’m not your fucking plaything, and who gives a flying fuck if I’m scarred? Ask Max how it happened. I got it while I was busy killing one of your own, you fucking leeches.”
Stunned silence followed my pronouncement, and I took advantage of the moment to dive for the door again, shoving the surprised guard out of my way.
 “Stop.”
The word was quiet but forceful. Every muscle in my body went rigid and I found I couldn’t move.
“Come here.”
The other vampires watched with interest as I turned around, breaking out in a cold sweat as I fought the command. I managed to hold out until I made the mistake of meeting Max’s eyes. Though I didn’t want to do it, one foot lifted, then the other, bringing me closer to him. After three steps, I was back in the room—and found at that point that I could stop, though I couldn’t withstand the power of his spell enough to run again.
“Extraordinary,” commented another vampire that had been quiet up until now, his fangs glinting as he favored me with a wolfish grin. “I do believe this one doesn’t care for you, Euphron.”

A few of the others seemed to find this funny, smirking or making wry comments of their own. Catty bastards.

I have never seen an author put a character through more than Steven Montano put Eric Cross and his team through. I used to message him about the crap he put them through, but then I saw the hope in his series and I stopped sending messages. Bet he's glad those messages stopped. Anyways, I asked Eric Cross and Danika Black about their favorite moments. You know trying to bring out the happy. And let me just say I am more than pleased with this little bit I got.

This next scene takes place before chapter 1 of Vampire Down.... enjoy.

They sat beneath an ocean of stars.

The firelight played off their faces and cast flickering shadows against the walls of night.  Cross watched the flames with a sense of fear lodged in his chest.  He sweated in spite of the cold, kept the rifle and the blades close by.  The air was caged by walls of mist and heavy with the stench of gunpowder and rust.  He tried not to look at the sky too much for fear of falling into it.

Danica sat on the other side of the fire, staring off into nothingness.  The lights danced off her eyes, eyes he'd gotten lost in, and would get lost in again.  Their charges, Ronan and Shiv, were wrapped tight in blankets close by, oblivious and concealed from the shadow-laden air.  The wind was cold and sharp and the only thing to be heard for miles.

They'd made camp in the nook of a short hill next to an old oak tree that looked to have been dead for years; the bark had split and revealed a rotted and cold interior, and empty holes sat where creatures might have once hid.  The branches swayed overhead, long renovated of any leaves.

“How's your soup?” Cross asked.

Danica hadn't touched her bowl in a while.  The small pot they'd cooked with still hung over the flames, boiling what was left of the instant mix that had used up more of their water than Cross had intended.

“Not too hungry,” she said.  “How's yours?”

“Tastes like...I don't know...not soup.”  They kept quiet.  They weren't sure what else was out there, what other creatures they might encounter in the ruins of the old world.  It seemed as if everything was dead and gone.  For all they knew, that was exactly the case, and they were all that was left.

“You know what I really miss,” Cross said.  Danica looked up at him.  He forced a smile.  “Tacos.”

“Really?” she said, smiling in spite of their grim circumstance.  “I took you for more of a cheeseburger kind of a guy.”

“There's nothing wrong with a good cheeseburger,” he said with a nod.  “But if I was able to conjure some food right now, it would be a taco.  There were a couple of street vendors in Thornn who actually put together some decent Mexican food.”  He saw her eyes drift, locked on nothing.  Worry had latched into them with claws.  The surrounding night was far from safe.  It seemed that after all they'd been through, this was their reward – to return to a land they'd failed.

Don't think like that, he told himself.  Be strong, for her sake.

“You know what I miss?” she said.  Her deep red hair lifted in the wind.

“What's that?”

“Music,” she said.  “It's been a long time since I got to listen to a tune.  And I'm not talking about that shitty tribal crap Ronan listened to.”  Her eyes caught on their unconscious ally for a moment, and Cross saw the fear return.

“What do you like?” he asked.  “What sort of music?”

She thought for a moment.

“Classical,” she said.  “It can...I don't know...take you away.  Lift you from yourself.”  She looked at him through the flames.  “That would be nice right about now.”

Cross met her gaze.  His heart pounded in his chest.  Tension rang down his back like a bony hand.

“We're going to be okay,” he told her.

She nodded.

“You believe that?” she asked.

“I have to.”

Danica nodded again.

“I'm glad you're here,” she said.  “I don't know what I would have done if something had happened to you.”

Cross felt warm inside.  Even with as exhausted and worn down as he was, hearing those words filled him with a spark of life.

“You know, for as painful and shitty as this has all been,” he said, “I'd do it all again if it meant being here with you.”

She smiled, a real smile, and the glow inside him spread.

They didn't need to say anything more, so they sat there in silence, close to the fire and under the stars.  Knew they the world would be no better come morning, but all they could do was carry on.

Wow! Love this. And that last line from Eric Cross, absolutely killed me! And hey did you know you can start this series for FREE!!! Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Smashwords

blurb

War has come to the United States. It’s been brewing for years as the government and Military Police wage war on the outcasts known as the Bionics. It’s spilling out into the streets as the militant Rejects continue to wage war against the ‘inferior’ humans, the M.P.s are raiding neighborhoods and putting Bionics to death, and I am fighting alongside the Resistance to save our kind from extinction. To top it all off, the president has now declared martial law, and the rights of American citizens are being stripped away one by one. Together, with the vigilante known as The Patriot, and my Resistance family, I am prepared to fight the impossible fight, to stand up for what’s right. From a single spark, our little rebellion has grown into a revolution, a roaring fire that will envelop the nation. At the same time, things in my personal life are finally turning around. I’m in love with a beautiful girl who loves me back, and we might have a shot at a real future … unless the enemy manages to snatch away from me everything that I hold dear.

excerpt

A weapon’s muzzle suddenly comes up to the back of my head and I freeze, lifting my hands and the CBX with it. An M.P. in white, fiberglass armor circles around me, the gun now focused on my forehead. I can see just by looking that he has it on the kill setting. “Look, man,” I say calmly. “I’m not one of them. I’m on your side here.” He raises the face shield of his helmet, and I’m face to face with a fresh recruit. He can’t be any older than eighteen and skinny as a rail, shaking like a leaf. “Don’t come any closer,” he says, his high-pitched voice trembling with the force of his fear. Around us, the fight rages on. “You’re all the same, just a bunch of freaks.” I shrug. “Come on, dude. We both know I could have killed you by now. But I’m not here to fight you. We just want justice. Look around you and you’ll see the real killers, the real freaks. Turn your gun on them, and I’ll do the same.” He frowns. “Fight with you?” “With me, next to me, behind me, whatever. What’s your name, kid?” He swallows noisily, his Adam’s apple bobbing in his throat. “Ethan.” I nod. “Okay, Ethan, I’m Dax. You got a girl, Ethan?” Ethan lowers the gun. “Yeah… I mean, kind of. She doesn’t really know I like her.” I smile. “Been there, man, done that. I got a girl too, back home. I kind of told her I loved her a few days ago.”
Ethan’s eyebrows shot up. “Whoa, that’s huge.” “Right? Big stuff. Plus, I promised her I’d try to make it back alive. The way I see it, I stand a better chance of that if we can try to fight together, even if it’s just for today. What do you think? Let’s end this shit so we can get home. You have a girl to win over, and I’d rather not piss mine off by coming home in a body bag.” Ethan nods. “Yeah. Yeah, okay, sure.” My hand grasps his shoulder just as a flying metal disc comes whizzing at his head. He cries out as I take him to the ground, just barely saving him from being decapitated. I’m not quite as lucky. The metal disc slices into my cheek as it flies by, laying it open. Pain explodes along the left side of my face, leaving a trail of fire that goes from my jaw to just beneath my eye. Another inch and I’d be sporting a falsie like Blythe. Behind Ethan, one of the Rejects has some sort of makeshift gun mounted on his shoulder. It’s the size of a small cannon, and it is shooting another disc at me. Dropping for cover and avoiding another gash, I grab Ethan’s shoulder again. “You good?” He stares at me with wide eyes and nods. “Yeah.” “Cool. Stay down while I kill this dickhead.” This time when he fires at me, I’m ready. The pistons in my leg joints fire rapidly and I jump, my boot connecting with the disc and kicking it back the way it came. I give Ethan a hand up as the Reject’s head slides from his shoulders, taken off by his own disc. “Can dish it out but can’t take it,” I grumble as I help Ethan to his feet. He smiles at me appreciatively. “You saved my life, man. Thanks.” “No need to thank me. Now, let’s go save some others.”

blurb
About The Bionics Series:
The year is 4010. Nuclear war and the wasteful nature of humans have all but destroyed the United States. A new government regime rules the day with strict laws, rationed food, and careful control. When those injured in the nuclear blasts that rocked many of the nations largest cities are offered another chance by the Restoration Project, how could they refuse?
Little do they know that the robotic additions to their body will paint targets on their backs once the government decides that they are dangerous. At the forefront of the resistance is a girl with a bionic eye, Blythe Sol, who wants nothing more than to be a normal girl. Blythe has yet to realize that normal will never exist again for her, or anyone else.
About The Bionics, Book 1:
All I ever wanted was to be a normal girl. I had dreams of joining the ranks of the Military Police and making my family proud. But the nuclear war that laid waste to our country destroyed any hope I had of being normal ever again. They took everything away from me, including my humanity. I am now half-human, half-machine, part of the never-ending freak show that is the Restoration Project.
They hate what they created and they fear us for being powerful.
And so they hunt us, destroying our lives so that they can bury what they built. What they don’t know is this: there is a Resistance out there and The Bionics aren’t going down without a fight.

blurb
We stand on the brink of a double rescue mission, a plan so foolhardy that even our bravest men are quaking inside with fear. Storm the capitol, free the prisoners, don’t get killed. It seems like a suicide mission, but not a single one of us has anything to lose.
In my past life, I was a scoundrel; a drug peddling street thug who cared nothing for anyone because I had no one to care for me. The nuclear blasts of 4006 reminded me of the value of life, and a girl with the saddest eyes I’ve ever gazed into gave me someone to care for. Now, as we embark on our most dangerous enterprise, I can only hope that we make it out alive and that those we have lost can be recovered.
Foolishness … fear … hope … These are the elements that threw our revolution into motion. As the momentum of the Resistance continues to build, we can only pray that hope continues grow larger than our fear.

blurb
Before The Resistance, my life was one of privilege and comfort. Before The Resistance, mine was a mindset of naiveté and blind trust in a broken and corrupt government. Before The Resistance, I’d never stood up or fought for anything in my life.
Now, there is everything to fight for and everything to lose. All for a glimmer of hope in our future. It may seem a small thing but with the smallest bit of hope, men have risen against their oppressors with fists raised, even when they knew they stared into the face of death.
Now that I have found something to fight for, I can only hope that my past will not become a roadblock to my future and that the secrets I’ve kept from those whose trust I’ve gained will not come back to ruin the new life I’ve made. If they do, I fear that I will not only lose my place as part of the Resistance, but the heart of the girl I am slowly coming to love.

blurb
Most nineteen-year-old girls are thinking about college, stretching the wings of newfound adulthood, and boys. Well, I’ll probably never go to college, and all my dreams of the future are gone. I’ve been adult for much longer than I should have been, and my girlhood was stolen the minute the North Koreans dropped their nukes over the United States. As for boys … well, that’s pretty much out of the question now. My love life is too messy to even talk about.
I have nothing.
Except, maybe, my cause—my mission—The Resistance. It is the hope I have to cling to. I am counting on it to pave the way to my future. As things heat up and the terrorist sect known as The Rejects make themselves known opponents of society in this war, the choice to be on the side of good is harder than ever. My friends are broken; Olivia is a shell of her former self, and Jenica is barely hanging on. Dax and Gage … well, we’re not talking about my love life, remember?
The Rejects, the government, President Drummond… they are pressing in on us from all sides, and the weight is tremendous. Still, when given the choice to crumble or stand, I’d rather stand. Times are dark, but we are here, a rebellion, a whisper in the dark, a spark that lights the flames of change.

Penumbra by Logan Patricks {Blog Tour: Spotlight & Review}

*Received a free copy in exchange for an honest review

Blurb~
In one night, I lost everything: my hopes and dreams, my best friend, and Shadow’s heart. He told me he loved me, but it was just a lie.

The Midnight Society has fallen, reduced to ashes by a monster--a person whom we all once trusted. The betrayal has shattered our lives forever and Shadow, Lord of the Midnight Society, finds himself at a crossroad.
One road leads him further down the path of vengeance, filled with unending violence and dead bodies. The other road leads to me. However, our path to happiness is paved with broken glass and razorblades, and at some point, one of us is going to fall.

Welcome to the world of the Midnight Society.

My Review~

In one night everything changed for Aria and Shadow. Aria's hope at love and happiness shattered. Shadow's world, crumbled. They both struggle to pick up the pieces of what is left of their life and The Midnight Society. They should have each other, but thanks to the one who betrayed them, they don't have that either. Aria has her tattered heart and Shadow has vengeance. Now they have to decide if they are meant to be on the path together or separate. One thing is for sure, this path won't be easy. And you can be certain there will be dead bodies along the way.

Aria has been through hell. She went from the poor house to rodeo drive in a heartbeat. Fell fast and hard for the dark, elusive, and sexy as hell Shadow. Then had it all ripped away. Despite all this Aria hasn't changed who she is. She is still sweet, caring, insightful and speaks her mind, but when it comes to Shadow she doesn't know what to do. She's broken hearted, lonely, and wants her life back. The question is which life does she want? Life before Shadow, or life after Shadow?

Penumbra picks up right where Semblance left off, with Shadow and Aria neck deep in the middle of hell. The Midnight Society has fallen, taking the statuesque Shadow right down with it. But Shadow is a fighter and has a strong thirst for vengeance. And he makes getting revenge his number one priority and he doesn't care who he hurts along the way.

Underneath his lust of revenge, Shadow is broken. Everything he has known and loved has been ripped away from him. Not only does he have to fight to rebuild his life, he has to fight to discover who he really is. In Penumbra we see Shadow crumbled, angry and so broken down that it seems that love will never shine through his broken walls. He is so thirsty for blood and leaves a deadly trail in his wake. But as he hunts down the one responsible he finds pieces of himself and gets a glimpse at a life he could have. Shadow is stubborn, there is no denying that. In Penumbra he is also an ass. Granted he is a sexy ass, but I wanted to beat the crap out of him in this book. I screamed at him, cursed at him, and broke down over him. But little by little Shadow redeemed himself. He began to grow into the man that I glimpsed in Semblance, the man that Aria and I know he can be.

Then there's Lincoln. In Semblance he was quiet and mysterious. Always on the side lines, like a sexy predator. In Penumbra he takes center stage. No longer stalking his prey from the side lines, he now has a front row seat thanks to Shadow. I have a deep love for Shadow. Despite all his faults, I know he is a good man and I will always root for him, but Lincoln.... Lincoln is a whole other animal. He is sleek like a black panther, sly like a fox, and hungry... yes like the wolf. We get a lot more of him in Penumbra. A LOT more of him. I liked him before, but now thanks to Logan Patricks spinning, he has weaseled his way into my heart. Things have definitely gotten interesting in the world of The Midnight Society.

Now I wish I could give you more... oh there is so much more. So much anguish, excitement, and steam. But there are also things that shouldn't be said. People who I can't speak of. Things that you are just going to have to read for yourself... but I can say this....

Penumbra is an explosive read in reverse. It starts after the explosion. With everyone picking up the pieces, then we follow the characters as they attempt to rebuild what they have and as they struggle to deal with the betrayal that has cut them so deep. Little by little the walls get rebuilt. They become stronger. They see a glimmer of hope again, but like all Logan Patricks stories, another explosion comes and tears all the walls down again. The story of The Midnight Society is dark, mysterious, sexy, steamy, and dangerous as hell. It is indeed a "road paved with broken glass and razor blades."

Logan Patricks talent at crafting a story is amazing. He continues to play me like a fiddle. He knows all the chords to strum. All the notes that need to be played and he puts them in such an order that leaves you completely and totally breathless. By the time you finish Penumbra you won't know what hit you. But you will know it was beautiful, magical and something you probably won't see again. Well not until the next installment in the series.

To show you just how amazing Logan Patricks is with words, here is one of my favorite lines from the book.

See, beautiful words written as good as any music. Logan Patricks knows just how to play his readers.

About the Author~
Logan discovered both love and heartbreak at the tender age of seven, when the pretty little blue-eyed girl next door stole his Kit-Kat bar and shared it with the bad boy from across the street. Devastated, Logan found solace by escaping into imaginary worlds he forged with words, creating kingdoms where the chivalrous knight always got the princess.
Twenty three years later Logan spends his days in a suit and tie, working for the government on matters of network security. However his thoughts never strayed too far from the incendiary nature of love — the passionate fire that’s both scintillating and dangerous. Obsessed with exploring the steamy and mysterious side of human nature, Logan continues to create worlds filled with thrills, mystery, and of course, sex.
