Sam’s Solace, The Guitar
My
mother’s been blitzed out on one kind of alcohol or another for the past ten
years. My father? He’s just a control freak. He thinks I should take over his
business and says my music is a waste of time. He doesn’t get it. He never has.
Shortly
after my mother’s accident—the one that turned my family upside down—I received
my first guitar. It only took seconds before I fell in love, and though I
couldn’t play yet, just the sounds my fingers elicited over the strings soothed
my soul. You see, music is the one thing that saved me. It was my only solace
over eight years of my family’s dysfunction. I live and breathe the guitar.
When I play, all my anxieties melt away. I no longer hear the thumping of my
mother rooting through the cupboards, getting yet another drink. It makes my
father’s blame over the years, for that long ago accident, just a little more
bearable, and his selfish demands, just a little easier to swallow.
Take away my guitar, and you take
away my soul. It’s that simple.
My friends? They only care about
the band and that I make them look good. They plan on going off to New York
after graduation, but I’m hiding a secret. One that perches itself among the
branches of my dreams, one that’s as important to me as life itself—Juilliard.
Want to see how things pan out? I
won’t sugar coat it. Things get pretty rocky. But to find out, I guess you’ll
just have to read about my journey, a little thing called Freedom Road.
