{Blog Tour} The Unbound by Victoria Schwab {Interview}

**Man I love that cover. Isn't awesome? Well today I have a wonderful treat for all of you because today I have a fun and quirky interview with the lovely author of this book and a spotlight of this book! So stop by and check it all out.

~Interview~

Thank you so much for stopping by the blog today and allowing me to pester you with totally random questions Victoria. I am super excited to have you here.

--Thank you so much for having me!

Ready for some random questions? Ready or not….here goes.

--My body is ready.

1)      If you could be any mystical creature what would you be and why?

--I know I should say narwhal, since I’m constantly talking up how awesome they are, but I am actually not a huge fan of the ocean, so I’m going to go with centaur. Because CENTAUR.

2) Help me settle the age old debate, waffles or pancakes? Why?

--Crepes. Because they are an excuse to roll nutella and bananas INTO A BURRITO.

**Yum, Nutella! That is my favorite thing ever!

3)      Which socks are better blue or red? Please explain your reasoning.

--Blue. Because it is my favorite color and therefore when I see it I have an automatically warm and fuzzy response, which would then translate into an ACTUAL warm and fuzzy response. On my feet.

4)      Paperback or ebooks? Why?

--Paperbacks (or hardcovers). Never ebooks. I have to be able to hold the book. To smell it. To physically touch and turn the pages. It’s a large part of my experience and it doesn’t translate to digital consumption. Nothing sinks in for me unless it’s there in paper and ink.

5)      You are flying through the air and see a forest glimmering in the distance. There are shouts of help coming from below. A) How are you flying? B) Do you stop to see who is crying for help? C) If you stopped to help, describe the scene.

--I am on my Nimbus 2000.
--I stop, but with a healthy degree of skepticism and a drawn wand because the forest is full of dark things.
--I was totally right, and turns out to be a trap set by death eaters and I only narrowly escape. But it’s worth it because think of the story I’ll be able to tell.

**Lol... I take it you are a Harry Potter fan?! Man I love this answer!!!!

~The Book~

Synopsis:
Imagine a place where the dead rest on shelves like books. Each body has a story to tell, a life seen in pictures that only Librarians can read. The dead are called Histories, and the vast realm in which they rest is the Archive.

Last summer, Mackenzie Bishop, a Keeper tasked with stopping violent Histories from escaping the Archive, almost lost her life to one. Now, as she starts her junior year at Hyde School, she's struggling to get her life back. But moving on isn't easy -- not when her dreams are haunted by what happened. She knows the past is past, knows it cannot hurt her, but it feels so real, and when her nightmares begin to creep into her waking hours, she starts to wonder if she's really safe.

Meanwhile, people are vanishing without a trace, and the only thing they seem to have in common is Mackenzie. She's sure the Archive knows more than they are letting on, but before she can prove it, she becomes the prime suspect. And unless Mac can track down the real culprit, she'll lose everything, not only her role as Keeper, but her memories, and even her life. Can Mackenzie untangle the mystery before she herself unravels?

With stunning prose and a captivating mixture of action, romance, and horror, The Unbound delves into a richly imagined world where no choice is easy and love and loss feel like two sides of the same coin.

Ophelia is given the rare chance to become a grim reaper. She must become Leila Bele, cut ties with her old life, and follow the rules of the reapers. Her greatest adventure begins with death.

**And now an excerpt to wet the appetite!

~Excerpt~

"The scroll chose you. For whatever reason, she's your reap."

“Well, that sucks." Leila chewed her bottom lip. "If I don't do it?"

Edon hesitated before he said, "Her soul will rot inside her body. Do you have any idea what that’s like? She'll be a living corpse, a shell of a person. She won't feel anything including love. We as reapers, the undead, feel more than she ever will alive."

Leila swallowed the lump in her throat. "How do you know that?"

"Because I've seen what it does to a person," Edon said. "That little girl deserves better."

Seventeen-year-old Zayn has special powers she cannot control—powers that others fear and covet. Will vengeance be worth the life of the one love she has left?

Exclusive Excerpt!
Earic emerged from behind a rosebush, his eyes glistening at her. He looked misplaced, this broad-shouldered monk-warrior, wandering amid the blooms of an Eastern garden. Even at night, the reds and golds and pinks were vivid and breathtaking. “Is Marguerite well?” he asked immediately, his brow creased with concern.
Zayn frowned as he sat beside her on the bench. “She has been better.”
“Her injury—”
“It is healing well. It’s not her leg that ails her so much.” Zayn looked down into her lap. How would she tell him what Marguerite should be telling him herself? This whole situation was terribly uncomfortable. “Lady Melisende has forbidden her from keeping your company.”
He exhaled, looked down as well. “I thought she might.” Zayn tilted her head to look at his profile. His hair was freshly washed and still damp, dark at the roots and shorter than before. Gone was the baby-faced Fair Boy she remembered; the man beside her had a network of scars on his sun-baked face and neck. His palms were like cracked leather, and the scent of sandalwood mingled with the musk of a man. She was surprised to find that it did not repulse her. In fact, it did quite the opposite. She glanced away.
“She never did approve of our friendship,” he said with a sad smile. “I was not good enough for her daughter. And I don’t disagree—I am not good enough for Marguerite.”
“Oh, stop,” Zayn said impatiently. “Just because you were not born into the right family doesn’t mean you cannot be friends.”
Earic looked at Zayn. “I suppose. But Marguerite is something special.”
Her expression softened. “Yes. I agree.” She hesitated for a moment. “She wanted me to tell you that no matter what, your friendship will endure.”
His smile was like a bolt of lightning in the dark. “Of course it will. Just like ours has.”
Zayn focused straight ahead, her blood beginning to hum. “I don’t know what you mean.”
“Zayn.” His voice was hoarse with emotion, his hand gently brushing against hers. “I know it’s you. I knew it was you the moment I saw you.”
“Your enemy,” she heard herself say, turning to look at him.
His voice was barely a whisper. “God’s bones! What have you become?”
Emotion clogged her throat, made her voice rasp. “Forget you ever met me, Earic. You must forget. I must kill you otherwise.”
“You can try. You won’t succeed.” He moved his hand up her arm, sending sparks throughout her body. “I had intended to visit Monteferrand soon. I wanted…to find you.”
She shook her head, her breath coming quickly now. “Find me? Why? You are a Templar, have you forgotten? And I…I’m not the girl you remember, not even a shadow of her.”
“I follow no one’s law but my own.” His face was illuminated from within. “As for the girl from Rafaniya… She’s here, I can still see her.” He raised his hand to her mouth and touched her lips with his forefinger.
Her every nerve tingled in response, her brain woozy with realization. Was it possible that he had feelings for her? In the blink of an eye, her hand flashed out, seeking his throat. Before she could grasp him, he’d snagged her wrist in his powerful fist. Her other hand lashed out; he stopped it as well. Her body rose in fury, but he rose with her, twisting her forcefully against him. Locking her within his arms, he lowered his head. “I won’t touch you, Zayn, I swear it. Please, control your strength. I don’t want to hurt you.”
The roar abated; her strength retreated like a falling tide. She gasped and slumped against him. How was he so strong? She was surprised how far up she had to look to meet his gaze. “I don’t understand. How…?”
His lips were inches from hers. “Haven’t you realized it yet, Zayn? You and I…”
His breath mingled with hers, intoxicating her. “What?” she managed to whisper.
Rather than answer, he dipped his head just a fraction and touched her mouth with his. The spark his lips ignited was so very different from the one created by her power. A warmth spread throughout her body, turning her muscles to jelly. She felt completely, utterly human in Fair Boy’s arms, and it was too good to be true…
She pulled away abruptly, horrified. “I have to go. I can’t… You must forget about me, Earic. Or else you put your life in danger.” Before he could reply, she turned and hurried away, breathless with fear.

{Blog Tour} Neversink by Barry Wolverton {Review + Giveaway}

*Received free copy in exchange for an honest review

Synopsis
Barry Wolverton’s masterful middle-grade debut, Neversink, is an epic tale of some very un-epic birds, a fast-paced and funny story of survival, friendship, and fish, in the vein of Watership Down and Kathi Appelt’s The Underneath.
Along the Arctic Circle lies a small island called Neversink, home to a colony of odd-looking seabirds called auks, including one Lockley J. Puffin. With their oceanfront views and plentiful supply of fish, the auks have few concerns—few, save for Lockley’s two best friends, Egbert and Ruby, a know-it-all walrus and a sharp-tongued hummingbird.
But all of this is about to change. Rozbell, the newly crowned king of the Owl Parliament, has long had his scheming eyes on the small colony to the north. Now Neversink’s independence hangs in the balance. An insurgence of owls will inevitably destroy life as the auks know it—unless Lockley can do something about it.

My Review

Life on Neversink is quiet and the auks are content to have it so. But there is disease on Tytonia and one fearful owl, Rozbell is determined to turn the land of Neversink into his own personal slave island. But not all the auks are willing to go with the flow, one lowly auk, Lockley is willing to face death to save his family and land.

In Neversink you have a land of birds, owls and a few other sea faring creatures that are in a battle to change the status quo. Granted you have some that want a change for very selfish reasons, while others want change just to not be stagnant and to keep them moving forward. One is evil, as you could probably already guess, while one is the unsung hero; determined to bring about change and save a land that doesn't realize it wants to be saved.

Owls and auks live divided. Owls on Tytonia and auks on Neversink. The two never visit each others lands. They live in harmony and all are perfectly happy to keep it that way. Well everyone except for Rozbell who wants nothing more than to become a dictator to both Neversink and Tytonia. Rozbell has evil plans. Plans that will leave everyone with a sour taste in their mouth.

Reading Neversink was a lot like watching the perfect Disney movie. One of the things I have always loved about Disney was their uncanny ability to turn the life of animals into a life like any other. To make those animals as real as any person. And Barry Wolverton did that. He breathed life into each of the characters of Neversink causing me to actually forget at times that this was a tale about animals. His characters were all well developed and had great stories that helped me to connect to each of them.

Neversink was an absolutely adorable fun read that had me chuckling at every corner. I cheered for the good guys, booed the bad guys and gasped at moments that took me by complete surprise. Neversink is a fun tale that will take you back to a simpler time in life where animals had voices and led very full lives.

Book Blurb~
A modern day thrill ride, where a teen girl and her animal companion must participate in a breathtaking race to save her brother's life—and her own.

Tella Holloway is losing it. Her brother is sick, and when a dozen doctors can't determine what's wrong, her parents decide to move to Montana for the fresh air. She's lost her friends, her parents are driving her crazy, her brother is dying—and she's helpless to change anything.

Until she receives mysterious instructions on how to become a Contender in the Brimstone Bleed. It's an epic race across jungle, desert, ocean, and mountain that could win her the prize she desperately desires: the Cure for her brother's illness. But all the Contenders are after the Cure for people they love, and there's no guarantee that Tella (or any of them) will survive the race.

The jungle is terrifying, the clock is ticking, and Tella knows she can't trust the allies she makes. And one big question emerges: Why have so many fallen sick in the first place.

~Excerpt~

“If you are hearing this message, then you have successfully completed the Pandora Selection Process. It also means you are now at the official starting line.”

Around me, Contenders whoop with excitement. Seriously? They’re about to plunge into a wild jungle, and that brings them happiness? Once again, I realize how out of my league I am. I don’t even have a change of clothes, for crying out loud.

“As you may have realized, you are on the outskirts of a rain forest. This will be the jungle part of the course. You will have two weeks to arrive at the jungle’s base camp. You will find this base camp by following the path of blue flags.”

Contestants glance around, immediately looking for the first blue flag. As for me, I’m watching the taillights of the semi and having a massive coronary.

“If you are the first to encounter a blue flag, you may remove it, but you may not remove the stake it is attached to. Doing so will result in immediate disqualification.”

I wonder why anyone would want to remove the flag to begin with. No one else seems concerned by this.

“While the Cure will be awarded to a single winner at the end of the last ecosystem, we will bestow a smaller prize for each leg of the race. The prize for the jungle portion will be monetary.” The woman pauses dramatically. “I’d like to officially welcome you to the Brimstone Bleed. May the bravest Contender win.”

That’s it? That’s all she’s going to say? Because it seriously sounds like she’s wrapping up. So why aren’t I running after the trucks? Why am I not chasing after my only way out of this jungle like my life depends on it? I know the answer — though I wish I didn’t. Cody would do this for me. I am his only hope. I have to believe his cure exists. My only other option is to return home and watch my brother die. If I could even get back home.

I glance around frantically, looking for someone to tell me what to do. The Contenders have formed a long line, the kind you see at the start of a marathon. A few yards down from where I stand — I see him. My throat tightens when I realize his cold blue eyes are locked on me. It’s the guy from the Pandora Selection Process. The serial killer–looking dude who I thought was going to kidney punch me. He glares in my direction like he might take this opportunity to finish what he never started. I raise my hand in a small wave, hoping it says something like: See? Look how friendly I am!

He lifts his own enormous hand. For a moment, I brighten. I think maybe that — even though it looks like he hates every fiber of my being — he’s going to wave back. But he doesn’t. He holds up two fingers — his pointer and his middle — places them under his eyes, and then points in front of us.

Oh no, he didn’t. I think he basically just told me to pay attention. I’m still processing this when the woman’s voice rings in my ear.

“Go!”

Awesome isn't it??? Not long now and you too can have this in your hands!

This is an easy list to create as I have a Little Black Book of Heroes that I flip through occasionally, and fondly imagine myself being swept into their arms…

1. Richard Armitage. I am totally in love with Richard. He is my current squeeze and graces my computer screen so I get to swoon over him every day. He has the kind of voice I could listen to all day. I could also look at him all day, too. It’s my dream to have dinner with him. (At the time of writing this, he is single!)

2. Rufus Sewell. This man has heartbreakingly good looks. He has a serenity about him that is restful, but look deeper into those green eyes and you’ll see the passion waiting to ignite.

3. Colin Firth. Yes, I know he is a bit past his sell-by date but I fell for him while watching Pride and Prejudice, especially the wet ruffled shirt as he emerges from the lake (sigh!) so he will always have a place on my list and in my heart.

4. Mark Strong. Totally and delectably gorgeous, even when he plays the baddy in a movie. He exudes strength and sex appeal, and I don’t care that he prefers to shave his head.

5. Aaron Eckhart. Blond and gorgeous with that cleft chin. I loved him in all his movie roles. He has a kind of innocence that I find appealing.

6. Christian Bale. The one and only Batman, I think he plays tortured souls very well and he is also hunky all over.

7. Gerard Butler. Need I say more than “300?” I think it’s the Scottish accent that drives me wild. He also has a roguish charm that I find irresistible, as well as the fact that he has a very yummy physique.

8. Henry Cavill. The one and only Superman. Apart from his model good looks and utterly amazing physique, he comes across as a very nice guy who could also sit down and offer a sad girl a shoulder to cry on.

9. Chris Evans. What a body, very good looks, and also an innate niceness about him that would make a woman feel safe to be with him. He is also a bit naïve which I find likable.

10. Robert Downey, Jr. Not a usual choice, I know, but he has loads of personality, he works out, and he has a devilish charm that is quite irresistible. I think he could make me laugh, which is a very good thing.

**I agree with more than one of those Heroes, especially Robert Downey, Jr. he is HAWT!!! Hands down one of my all time favorite heroes. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your list.
