{Blog Tour} Semblance by Logan Patricks {Excerpt + Giveaway}

So at the end of last year I read this little book that not only captured my heart, but my imagination as well. This book completely blew me out of the water and the story still has its clutches in me today. What's the story you ask? Semblance by Logan Patricks. Since I reviewed the book last year today I am going to share a little excerpt with you. But I want you all to know that this book should be at the top of your to be read list!!! Want to see my raving review? Check it out here. And now on with the post!

Book Blurb~
Whoever said money couldn't buy happiness has never starved a day in their lives.

My name is Aria Valencia, a third year classical music student at the university, and I was down to my last dollar. Some nights, I seriously considered working at the rippers just to make ends meet, but the thought of my dad's spirit--God rest his soul--scowling at me while I danced up on some drooling degenerate was enough to turn me off the idea completely.

And then one night, chance came knocking on my door under the guise of the Midnight Society, a secret cabal comprised of the most wealthy and influential souls this side of the Universe. Their leader was a man named Shadow, who was equally enigmatic as he was gorgeous and, for some mystifying reason, had his dark brooding eyes focused on me.

Seduced by the promises of fame and fortune in exchange for a seemingly innocent request, I soon found myself drawn into a provocative world filled with both vast riches and unending lies and it didn't take long for me to realize what being a part of the Midnight Society actually entailed: shiny things, sensual romance, and dead bodies.

Being with Shadow came with a terrible price, one that I wasn't willing to pay. There's a dark side to every love story, and this one was mine.

~Excerpt~

His presence cast a hush throughout the gardens. Shadow strolled towards the three women on their knees, stalking them with an animalistic grace.

He was ominous, yet electrifying and I found myself trembling just standing in the same vicinity as he was.

“Your bride awaits you Shadow,” Calisto said to her brother.

I glanced around and noticed that everyone had their head bowed in reverence of this man.

It was disconcerting and this made me panic.

This had to be a cult; there was no other logical explanation in my mind. Any second now, this Shadow fellow was going to pass out the Kool-Aid and we were all going to drink it and die.

There was still time for me to flee. I could pretend to use the bathroom and then sneak out the window or something. I had no idea where on the map this estate was, but that didn’t matter. I needed to escape and I could figure the rest out later.

I looked around to see if anyone else was watching me.

Damn it, indeed someone was. Calisto’s eyes were deadlocked onto me.

I panicked and almost let loose a scream, but managed to contain myself. Thank God for the mask I was wearing, which hid the expressions on my face.

Calisto smiled and winked at me, which I thought was a bizarre thing to do. I had no idea what was happening or what to expect, but I desperately wanted to be away from here.
Now this is just one reason you seriously need to read this freaking book already!! And to help with that make sure you enter the giveaway!

About the Author~
Logan discovered both love and heartbreak at the tender age of seven, when the pretty little blue-eyed girl next door stole his Kit-Kat bar and shared it with the bad boy from across the street. However his thoughts never strayed too far from the incendiary nature of love — the passionate fire that’s both scintillating and dangerous. Obsessed with exploring the steamy and mysterious side of human nature, Logan continues to create worlds filled with thrills, mystery, and of course, sex.

Excerpt #2

I gripped the console as I watched the twitches and spasms of the zombies’ movements closing in on us. They were everywhere…the grass, the sidewalk, the driveway. There was no mistaking the rotting, grey flesh that exposed the muscle and bone of the undead. They were something I’d run from countless times, but this time we had nowhere to run. The undead had us trapped. They would rip us to shreds in an instant.
“I think some of ‘em are new,” I said, turning my attention back to Gavin.
There were some clean-looking zombies staggering toward us, their flesh mostly intact. That made no sense. The outbreak had been contained for months. There should be no freshly infected roaming around. Everyone had been vaccinated. The only stragglers evading capture had been around awhile, so their bodies were beat up badly by the time they were caught. Not these.
“Let’s hope not,” he murmured, not bothering to look out the window to confirm nor deny my suspicions.
“We can’t run. They’d totally get us before we got away,” I said, hoping he’d correct me, tell me that we had a chance.
He didn’t.
He slammed his fist into the steering wheel and looked over at me. When the outbreak happened, we never looked back. We were always on the move, running from the disease that took our families and friends. That was the key to survival. Never stay in one place. Always stay on the move. Now we had nowhere to move. I glanced over at Gavin and saw the fear in his eyes. Even with everything we’d encountered, his eyes had never held this amount of terror.
“Babe, whatever happens…”
“Knock it off,” I said.
“We have nothing to fight them with, and a horde this size needs a distraction.”
“Don’t you dare,” I hissed, shaking my head. The fear was pulsing through me at an unstoppable rate. “We didn’t live through the outbreak to die now.”

Excerpt:
“This way,” Nathaniel says from the side of the stage. We’re like cows being herded into individual pens to await sacrifice. There are closed-in cubicles constructed backstage, and each of us is placed in one without a word of guidance or encouragement. “Wait a second,” I say as I try to scan down the row one last time for Katie, but I’m shoved into my cubicle and the door shuts, enclosing me in between four confining walls with only the light of a lamp. I drag my hands down the fabric of the walls until I fall down into my seat. I tug on my braid again and again and again. Calm down. Breathe. Calm down. I chant this over and over again, imagining that Katie’s the one who’s coaching me. I shut my eyes and am back in her room. The scent of her perfume overwhelms the small space, but instead of making me sneeze, it comforts me. It makes my imagined state more real. I hear loud clapping coming from off the stage and know someone must’ve just gone. They obviously weren’t a Defect. No one wants a Defect at their ceremony. A voice shouts, “Let’s go, Todd Jenson. It’s time to meet your partner.” I wonder if it was Katie on stage. I wonder if he’s her partner. I wonder this through eighteen more times worth of clapping and cheering and name calling. Anytime now, they’ll open my door and force me to stand before the crowd, force me to touch the quartz, force me to face my peers in shame. If they deem me a Defect, I’ll be the first this Culling, and most likely the only. I twist my hands into knots and think about my parents. They have to be out there by now. I’m going to walk out there and they’re going to be in the front row smiling. I open my eyes. Four walls. They’re closing in on me. They’re suffocating me. I have to get out. “Faye Middleton?” The door opens and air rushes in. I draw sharply on it as the cheering continues. Another novice and her new partner walk off stage. It’s the girl with black hair. She’s coyly looking at him from under her lashes. He looks pissed. Nathaniel guides me forward, and I want to yank my arm from him. I want to tell him I left my courage back in that cubicle, but I don’t. I can’t. My lips are glued shut by fear. My knees have turned into two extremities of doubt, and I know I’m going to fall. I’m going to forget how to speak. Steel blue eyes find mine from across the stage. Elder Maddock. He bows ever so slightly in my direction, his eyes seeking past my outer appearance. I wonder if he knows who I am. He has to. I stop right before him and feel like a bird trapped in a cage. I can’t escape the thousands of eyes studying me. I can’t escape the hundreds of assumptions building me into something I’m not. “Faye Middleton,” he says, his voice eager and curious. There’s a friendly lightness in his voice I don’t expect, a sound that makes me feel safe and comfortable under his gaze. He has thick, golden brown hair combed neatly over to the side and back, showing off the squared planes of his face. He looks much younger than he should, but older than my father. “Are you ready to begin?” I turn to the crowd and scan desperately for my parents. Eyes. There are so many eyes. Too many. They form together, creating an awful monster that wants to swallow me whole. I can’t find them. The eyes have hidden them from me. I’m all alone. I try to swallow, but my mouth is so dry. I bite the inside of my cheek, curbing the need to release tears. The Witch standing next to him says, “Faye, he asked you a question.” I take in a tight breath and force myself to look away and back at Maddock. “I’m sorry,” I whisper, my stomach twisting a little tighter. He pretends not to notice the panic I’m sure my face is masked in and offers me the kindest, most patient smile. “Everyone is nervous on the day of the Culling,” he says knowingly. “I was a wreck the day of mine.” Polite laughter comes from the audience, and I feel myself relax just enough so that I can breathe again. He offers me a small wink…a knowing sort of wink, and says, “Your parents will be proud.” He says these words carefully, evenly, and I know he’s trying to tell me something. They’re okay? He’s aware of who I am. “So are you ready to begin?”

My Review

Kiora is in the fight of her life, she will have to use all the power that she possesses in order to fight the darkness that threatens to swallow Meros. She will have to learn that this is war and that in war bad things happen and people die. Sacrifices will be made, lives will be lost, as all hope of freedom is put on the shoulders of the Solus.

In Wings of Lomay we follow Kiora, Emane and Alcander as they make preparations for their final stand. As the Solus leadership sort of falls on Kiora's shoulders as everyone looks to her for guidance. This is not a role that Kiora is particularly comfortable playing, but she has grown tremendously since first learning of her destiny. She was once afraid of her own powers, her own strength, but now she is a force to be reckoned with. She is strong, confidant and a natural leader. She falls into her role as the Solus with trepidation, but flourishes under the guidance of her allies.

Every character in this series has grown tremendously since Wings of Arian. Each character has come into their own in this series, accepting the role they play in the quest to rid Meros of it's darkness. This is especially true of Prince Emane. When Prince Emane first graces the pages of the series he is cocky, arrogant, timid, fearful, and not ready for his role in the future. But as time passes Emane grows, matures, and by the end of Wings of Lomay Prince Emane is selfless, fierce, cocky, loyal, thoughtful, and deep. Of all the characters in this series, Emane is by far my favorite. I think Emane the witow, was stronger than any of the characters with magic, to me he is the true hero of this story. He is the underdog. The person that is always there to help the hero through their quest. He is the strength and heart of this tale. Oh sure, the story is about Kiora, but the hero of Lord of the Rings was supposed to be Frodo when we all know that Sam was the real hero. Well Emane is Sam, Kiora is Frodo. Without Emane Kiora would have failed a long time ago. It is because of his strength that she was able to make a final stand in Wings of Lomay. And in a world full of magic, he stood tall, proud and fearless.

I guess there is no secret where my loyalties lie! For me it has always been about Emane. Not Alcander, the powerful, beautiful Tavean. Oh I like him too, he's just not Emane.

I have mad love for this series, I have been in love with it since the beginning and it saddened, terrified and excited me to finally get my hands on Wings of Lomay. I have known where this story was going since book 2, Wings of Tavea. I saw the writing on the wall, I saw the clues that Devri Walls left on the pages, the crumbs that I knew would eventually mean the end of my heart. This entire series we have been building up to this huge battle, where the Solus was going to either succeed or fail. And in Wings of Lomay we finally get it. We finally get to see what all this struggle was about. What it was all for. We finally get closure.

Wings of Lomay was a wonderful ending to an incredible journey. All the story lines were tied in neat little bows. But it was gut wrenching and it brought me to my knees in pain and anguish. Devri Walls completely shattered my heart and put a hole in my soul with her perfect telling of Wings of Lomay.  Nothing prepared me for what I found in the pages. Nothing. But I take my hat off to Devri Walls and applaud her ability to turn my sorrow and pain into something beautiful, something worth it, she made it shine brighter than the stars.

Wings of Lomay is what a series ending should be like, powerful, raw, emotional, and satisfying. This was my favorite book of the series, it will leave you breathless, somber, blissful and a total hot mess. Even now, looking back over the story I cry. Devri Walls and Wings of Lomay broke me and you totally need to read it!

My Review

Life for Namine has always been a battle. But her battles are only beginning. Where she once battled family, she now battles for a world that is bigger than she is. For a cause that is bigger than she is. But this battle is more than just a battle of strength. It is a battle of wills and a battle of the heart. So much is on the line for Namine, Rydan, Mycah and Nari, will their combined strength be enough to deliver them safely through this next struggle?

Throughout the Sweet Series we have followed the story of Nari, Mycah, Rydan and Namine, watching as they all come to terms with what has been set before them. There has been a ton of struggle, heartbreak, scars, and none of their lives will be the same. Throughout the series there is one thing you can count on; Mycah's desire to take back his kingdom. You know that's where this story is going, that's part of what this story is about. With every book we get closer to the ending, which I am sure will be explosive. But along the way we get to see these characters falter and grow. We get to see them become truly remarkable people. We see them make sacrifices for each other, their kingdom and the greater good. We see them grow stronger as they take a stand and fight for the future they all so strongly desire. Nari becomes stronger and more confidant as she accepts the truth of where she truly belongs. The same with Rydan. As he finally accepts the truth about his life we see him morph into an incredible warrior who is definitely a force to be reckoned with. Of course Mycah is his own special creature. We have always known that he was fierce and loyal, but now we get to discover just how deep his loyalty goes. We get a glimpse at more than just the warrior elf, we get a glimpse into what it's really like to have the weight of the kingdom on your shoulders.

To finally learn some of what Mycah has gone through absolutely killed what little resolve I had before I began Sweet Requiem. He has always been the strong, rock that everyone could depend on. But in Sweet Requiem we are given a brief glimpse at a very broken Mycah. As his hurt and pain unfolded on the page so did my tears. His pain, deep and real made what was left of my heart crumble at my feet. If I didn't love Mycah before this book, I would certainly love him now. Since I already love him, this book just made me love him that much more. Mycah's love knows no bounds, he loves deep, hard and with his entire being, he loves so much it hurts. And it is just WOW!

Sweet Requiem was a beautifully orchestrated piece, that played my emotions like a fiddle. Every time hope swelled in my heart something was there to smash it down into utter darkness. I cried so many times throughout this book I thought all my tears had surely dried up, but nope Bailey Ardisone proved that even with all those shed tears I could still cry. Especially when my heart is torn out of my chest and dropped off a cliff. (Bailey Ardisone did that, she ripped my heart out and dropped it off a ciff with the ending of this book!) This book was one giant emotional roller coaster. I was ready for heartbreak, but I think I cried a river with this one.

But despite the tears and the wet kindle, Sweet Requiem was a magical story that was full of moments that were sheer poetry. With words so eloquent and beautiful they just flowed off the page and sang to my soul. I felt every emotion deep as if it were my own. I lived this story. Felt this story as I curled up on my couch and sat there transfixed until I had devoured every single word. I was left an emotional wreck, but Sweet Requiem was worth every. Single. Tear.

There are so many magical, and beautiful moments in this book and each one makes me swoon or cry. But I think it is safe to share this little tid-bit with you.

My Review

Dane is still running from his past, determined to make up for some of his wrong doings and maybe wipe the slate a little clean. He is in search for the Dream Witch, originally hired to deliver her to her enemy, Dane has seen the light and has decided to place the rest of his humanity on her, now all he has to do is find her. With his unlikely traveling partner things get more than a little complicated, things get down right rough. But things aren't all roses and peaches for Ijanna either. Where Dane is running from his past, Ijanna is running from her future. Determined to change a destiny that more than frightens her. Her battle to change the future is not easy and it is one that very well could kill her.

In Path of Bones we follow the paths of Azander Dane, the fallen Dawn Knight. (Which if you ask me is a good thing). Kruje, Dane's new traveling companion, a Voss who is hated by every human on earth. Ijanna the hunted Dream Witch and her protector Kath, the sweet gentle soul that is in for the ride of his life. We also dive into the minds of the enemy; Empress Azaean and Kala. Their paths are all winding, slippery, and sloping. No one in this book has an easy life.

Everyone suffers some sort of struggle, definitely some more than others. Of course Dane, Kruje, Ijanna and Kath are right up there on the crap list (hit list), you know how they say crap rolls down hill? Well it is definitely like that for them. If there is something bad to find, you can pretty much guarantee it will cross their paths. And when I say bad, I mean big, REALLY big and REALLY bad. Think about the darkest and most twisted creatures you can imagine and times that by ten. Yea that pretty much sums up the crap this lot get's themselves into. One of my favorite creatures in this series is the Razorcats!
"A giant hunter cat with smoking skin, a lashing tail and disproportionately huge claws and teeth. Diamond black eyes.... a tongue lined with dark spines... and oversized jaws."

Now that is a wicked cat, definitely not something I would ever like to meet, day or night. All of Steven Montano's creatures are like that. Wicked. Twisted. And just down right vicious. His creatures aren't for the faint of heart and are definitely not meant to be cuddled.

The same can be said for his worlds. They are not all rays and sunshine, no his worlds are bleak, dark and lonely. His worlds are just as dangerous as the creatures that live there. But no matter how bleak, dreary and dark things get, there is always that one small splatter of hope. It's that hope that drives his characters to fight the darkness, to stay strong and carry on. It is that hope that keeps us readers reading and coming back for more, time and time again.

As always Steven Montano paints an incredible picture, creating beautiful imagery of the world that he creates. His characters are on point and he really gives you an insight as to who they are and why they behave the way they do. You can't help but feel connected to them, all of them, even the wicked ones.

Steven Montano is a master at weaving some very complicated stories. He is the master of taking multiple stories, or paths, and blending them together into one seamless, explosive story. It's like all the streams that feed into a river. All the individual stories have their own current and flow and when they converge, it's BAM, major explosions. There is so much going on in Path of Bones, but it isn't too much. The story is never overwhelming. Instead it's maddening, because you can see things falling into place. Like pieces of the puzzle you begin to see how the story all fits together and you know that spells some very bad things, but you can't help but continue to read and watch those pieces fall. Hoping that those pieces create something other than what you expect.

In Path of Bones you are taken to the edge of your seat. Delivers you to the hands of darkness and brings you back just far enough to give you hope. But I have to warn you, the ending leaves you right on the edge of a cliff. Your hope swells, but your fear grows as the story ends and we are left waiting for the next installment. Path of Bones is a great story, one that will keep you wanting more. One that will give you hope and take you on many paths.
